Something old, something new…floral edition

I’m a sucker for traditions and rituals, which is why I kind of love the old adage  ‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’. I thought it would be fun to figure out a new way to play with that saying through flowers.

First, the ‘something old’. These brooch bouquets have been showing up in magazines and on blogs with greater frequency lately. While they’re not really for me (I will always prefer a real flower), they are the perfect solution for many brides. Some couples choose to get married on a cruise ship that may not allow fresh flowers, and other couples may be having a destination wedding, and don’t want to have to deal with a local florist.

Whatever your reason for choosing this style, it is a fantastic way to showcase an heirloom piece of jewelery passed down from a relative.

Next up is the ‘something new’. Yes, that description can apply to anything really, but what if you think in terms of spring and newly sprouted ferns? Wouldn’t a fresh spring green conjure up feelings of a new beginning?

I’m taking some liberties with the whole ‘something borrowed’ category, but bear with me. I think that you can make an argument that a succulent bouquet is kind of borrowed. I mean, you can replant the succulent when you’re done with it in the bouquet, so you’re kind of borrowing it. It’s a reach, I know.

Horticulturalists and botanists will argue that there is no really true blue flower, but to the lay person, hydrangeas and delphinium sure look blue. Surely this stunner of muscari and agapanthus qualifies as ‘something blue.’

Why not combine all 4 pieces of the adage into 1 stunning arrangement?

The succulents are both blue and borrowed, the fiddleneck ferns are the new, and, if you fastened a vintage brooch to the stems of the bouquet, you’d have your old too!

What kinds of twists on this tradition can you think of?
